5 hacks to start getting high marks

Forget about all what you keep receiving as advice like “Work harder!!” “Study more!” We both know it’s not what you need to get better marks, and you are tired of working hard and still have inferior marks than your classmates who prepare for exams during only the last 2 weeks.

It’s not about how much you study, how many books you read, how many information you memorize… Not at all! Students getting high marks are just doing things in the smart way, not the hard way, except of course gifted students who get high marks because they are talented. I will give you 5 killer tips you can apply from today to start getting good marks with much less effort.

Analyze your professor's behavior

If your teacher in class is the one who will correct your exam paper and give you a mark, you have to look at him like your customer and customers need to be satisfied by your products which are your answers to their questions or exercises.

But not all customers have the same “tastes” I can say, so you need to know how do your professors like answers to their questions. Do they like exhaustive explanation and argumentation? Or only simple and on point answers? Do they like to find extra information that wasn’t mentioned during class in student’s answers or not? And so on.

For each teacher or professor, you need to know what you are supposed to do, by paying attention to their remarks and comments about your answers for exercises you correct in class, or by asking former students.

Take notes during class

No, it’s not what you think. For us now, taking notes is not for collecting more information. Notes will be your greatest resource to start making your preparation strategy. You need to take notes when your professor is explaining something more than he usually does, which means that this part of the course has a big chance to be the subject of an exam question.

You also need to take notes when your professor is giving his own explanation and point of view about something. Your notes will be your guide during preparation and they will help you organize your priorities and focus your effort and concentration in specific parts of the course.

One thing to add is to take notes even when you think that you don’t need them because you can remember… Nope, you will not, trust me. Just make sure to write down everything even when it seems stupid or easy to remember.

Look for old exams

Professors are often putting the same questions or exercises from their old exams, and even if it’s not the case, answering or solving exercises from old exams during preparation, will give you a clear idea about how your professor is putting exams and things he focuses on. It will also give you self-confidence and make you mentally prepared.

Try to find from where your teacher is getting exercises

No, I’m not telling you to hack his computer or follow him when he goes to the library. Just take parts of the exercises you correct in class, put it in a search engine and try to find identical or similar exercises on the internet.  It doesn’t work all the time, but when it does, you have guaranteed yourself a great mark with so much less effort and stress.

Manage your stress

Even if you are fully prepared for the exam, you did all the hacks I shared with you, and even if you already know the exam’s questions, but you are so stressed and exhausted, you will screw up.  You should make sure to have some rest, eat well and sleep well, and do everything that can help you reduce your stress and maintain your energy and vitality.
