How to deal with overthinking

The fact that you are here reading about how to deal with overthinking, means that you are really tired of thinking excessively about everything and spending big amounts of your energy and time in overly complicated analysis of the problems and events you encounter in your daily life. That’s a good thing! You actually made the first step of being aware of your problem, and you are ready to start dealing with this damaging and stressful mind issue.

In this article, we will try to stay simple, and we will stay away from complicated scientific psychological explanations… let’s not overthink about overthinking, and let’s take a look at just 3 simple and effective ways to stop being an overthinker.

Ask yourself: “Why I’m overthinking?”

Every time you feel like you are starting to overthink, just take a moment and ask yourself: why I’m overthinking about that?! Do you want to know all the details? You are afraid of what can happen in the future? Do you want to perfectly do something? You can’t admit that something unexpected just happened? … Trust me, all the answers that you can come up with, are not a reason to harm your feelings and ruin your mood.

You don’t need to know all the details about everything; you can’t know the future and even if you have a time machine and you saw what will happen next, fear and panic will get you nowhere! You can’t do things perfectly, you are not perfect, and you don’t need to be, all successful people you admire are so far from being perfect; thinking about how some events just were so unexpected and how they made you feel bad will just make you feel even worse, and it’s completely not worth it!

Express your thoughts

Expressing what you are thinking about is an effective way to make an end to your overthinking cycle. You can do that by sharing your thoughts with others, like close friends or any person with whom you can be totally honest and discuss what you have in mind.

You can express your thoughts by writing them down too. In the majority of times, you will find it hard to say:”this is what I’m thinking about” because there was actually only one idea that you were thinking about, but your mind was faking the feeling of having too much of complicated ideas.

This will make you know that you actually was freaking out about nothing. And even if you get to express many thoughts and ideas, this will give you a clear idea about them and you will be able to explore them in a simple and sure way. At that moment, the overthinking cycle will become useless and sometimes stupid in your eyes.

Spend energy on things that make you happy

One of the biggest reasons why some people always overthink is because they have a big amount of free surplus energy, so the brain takes care of it and uses it for complicated useless thinking and analysis. This energy should be spent on activities that you like and that can make you happy and relaxed.

There are so many things that you can do, like working out, hanging out with friends, watching a movie, drawing, writing, playing video games etc. Those activities (especially outdoor activities) will greatly help you get rid of your surplus energy, keep you distracted, and make you happy. Have you ever seen someone in happy mood overthinking? ...No!
